2020 has been a big year for The Lumion Collective and I can’t express how grateful I am to all of the wonderful members who enjoy all of the content that I’ve shared over the past few months.
To celebrate, I’ve created a (miniature) Christmas Village!

This is a concept that I explored a few years ago for Ark Visuals and I loved how quirky the final result was. This year, I thought I’d re-imagine the same scene with a lot of improvements.

I used a variety of the original assets, refining them a little further to help suit the scene.

As well as this, a few new models were created to help add some diversity to the ‘miniatures’ and expand the low poly terrain that made the base. I also sourced this awesome wooden train model from Ron Fritz at 3D Warehouse, you can find it here.

I made good use of the precipitation raindrops here and enhanced these with a custom overlay on the final image that added some frost to the glass. This was done using a grunge brush I made in Photoshop a while back and it's great for quickly adding these types of details.

The new models were created to replicate some DIY wooden village kits. I love the handcrafted look of these miniatures!

The Chalkboard texture was custom made in Photoshop and was hand-drawn by me using a few references I had put together. This was a first for me and it made good use of my new tablet!

The baubles were textured by me and rely on some very basic patterns with some matching glossiness maps to alternate the reflective values. I think these add a subtle hint of real-world scale to the scene!

I staggered the miniatures across different levels to add some variation and depth to the scene. This render shows this effect off perfectly and adds some grandeur to what is otherwise a very small model.
After everything was put together I spent some time editing a short animation to bring all of the scenes together!
This was a quick and very fun scene to put together and is a perfect way to wrap up 2020!
On behalf of The Lumion Collective, I want to wish you all a Happy holiday and a great new year. I can’t thank you all enough for supporting The Lumion Collective and I’m looking forward to sharing more with you in 2021!
See you next time!
